Reading Ancient Poems with Children
_
Intro
This series, published by China Children's Press & Publication Group, is a selection of Chinese ancient poems for children reading accompanied with their parents. It is divided into four volumes, involving different themes and artistic conceptions. I designed the entire style and tone, and the layout of this series of books as well as the bookmarks. Solution To make a harmonious relationship between the illustrations and texts, I conducted picture processing a lot via Photoshop, such as re-structuring a picture's composition, highlighting or weakening particular sections of a picture and selecting a specific character out of a picture for other use. This was a time-consuming and monotonous process, however, it was significant to the final visual effect. Meanwhile, I laid out texts, including two parts - the poem and its annotation, interacting with those images. The typeface selection followed a rule that it could demonstrate a modernised sense of Chinese traditional culture. A red stamp print, an icon of traditional aesthetics, was made for emphasising the importance of annotation, which could help children to understand poems smoothly. The entire tone was set as a warm, elegant and childlike atmosphere based on a proper paper type selection. |
